Does an Engagement Ring Come With a Wedding Band?

Usually not - the two are sold separately. But bridal sets include both, and here is when buying the pair together is the better decision.

Almost always, no. An engagement ring is sold on its own, and the wedding band is bought separately, often months later and sometimes from a different jeweller entirely.

There is one clear exception, and it is worth understanding because it solves a problem most couples do not see coming.

The exception: bridal sets

A bridal set is two rings sold together as one purchase – an engagement ring and a wedding band designed as a pair. The band is shaped to fit around the engagement ring, so the two sit flush with no gap between them.

When you buy the Curved Pear Cut Bridal Set or the Lozenge Cut Bridal Set in Rose Gold, you are getting both rings. The listing price covers the pair, and the two arrive together in matching metal.

You can see the full range in our bridal sets collection. Every centre stone comes with a free IGI certificate, as it does across everything we make.

Why the two are usually sold separately

Three practical reasons, and none of them are about squeezing more money out of you.

Timing. Engagement rings are bought before a proposal. Wedding bands are bought once a date is set. Those are often a year apart, and a lot changes in a year.

Choice. Most people want to choose their own wedding band rather than have it decided for them at the proposal. Taste changes once you have lived with the engagement ring for a while.

Surprise proposals. If the engagement ring is a surprise, guessing at both rings doubles the chance of getting it wrong.

The problem nobody warns you about

Here is why the question matters more than it looks. If you buy an engagement ring on its own, there is no guarantee that a standard straight wedding band will sit against it.

Most engagement rings have a setting that stands proud of the band. When you push a straight band up against it, a triangular gap appears. On a low or wide setting, that gap can be substantial.

Engagement ring shape Will a straight band fit against it?
Emerald or asscher cut Yes – flat edges sit naturally against a straight band
Round solitaire, tall setting Usually yes, with a small gap
Oval or cushion cut A gentle curve is usually needed
Pear or marquise cut No – the point blocks a straight band, so a V-shape is needed
Halo settings Usually not – the halo widens the head of the ring
Three stone rings Rarely – the side stones widen the base in both directions

This is fixable. A fitted or contoured band can be made to match almost any engagement ring, and we charge no extra design cost for that work. But it is a job you have to think about, and it takes time you may not have close to the wedding.

When buying a set is the better decision

Buy a bridal set if any of these apply.

  • You are choosing the rings together. If it is not a surprise proposal, there is no reason to split the purchase.
  • You want a pointed or halo centre stone. These are the hardest shapes to pair afterwards, so having the band designed alongside removes the problem.
  • You want the two rings to match exactly. Metals from separate orders can differ slightly in shade, and the difference only shows when the rings are side by side.
  • You want it dealt with in one go. One order, one delivery, one set of decisions.

A set such as the Tiara Pear Cut Bridal Set in Platinum shows how a pointed stone and a shaped band are designed around each other from the start.

When buying separately is better

Buy separately if the proposal is a surprise and you do not know their taste well, if you want the band to be a decision you make together after the engagement, or if you already own an engagement ring.

Buying separately also gives you flexibility on budget. You can spend on the engagement ring now and choose a band later without committing to both at once.

If you go this route, one piece of advice: check before you buy the engagement ring whether a band will sit against it. Ask the jeweller directly. Any honest one will tell you.

What if I already have the engagement ring?

Then you have three options, and all of them work.

A straight band that sits slightly apart. Perfectly acceptable, and a small gap bothers far fewer people than you would think. A stackable round cut full eternity band looks deliberate rather than mismatched.

A ready-made contoured band. If your engagement ring is a common shape, an off-the-shelf curved band may fit well enough.

A band made to fit. We measure your engagement ring and shape a band to it. Allow extra time for this – four to eight weeks is realistic, because your ring has to be measured before anything is made.

Does the wedding band cost extra on top of a set?

Not with us. A bridal set price covers both rings. If a seller lists an engagement ring and describes a “matching band available”, that band is a separate purchase – check before assuming.

It is worth reading listings carefully in general. Some sellers photograph an engagement ring with a band alongside it purely to show the look, without including the band in the price.

Questions to ask before you buy either ring

Whether you buy a set or buy separately, a few direct questions save a lot of trouble later. Any honest jeweller will answer all of them without hesitating.

  • Does this price include one ring or two? Obvious, but worth asking. Photographs showing two rings do not always mean two rings are included.
  • Will a straight band sit against this engagement ring? If the answer is no, ask what will, and whether they can make it.
  • Can you make a fitted band for this ring later? And how long would it take? Lead time matters more than price if the wedding is close.
  • Can this ring be resized? Full eternity bands often cannot. Find out before, not after.
  • Is the centre stone certified? Ours come with a free IGI certificate, which records the stone’s weight, colour, clarity and cut independently.

Buying the two rings at different times

If you are buying separately, a little planning at the engagement ring stage makes the wedding band far easier.

Note the metal precisely – not just “gold” but the carat and the colour. Two rings both described as rose gold can be visibly different shades side by side, and the mismatch only shows once they are on the same finger.

Keep the paperwork. A certificate and a receipt make it far quicker for a jeweller to match a band later, and they matter for insurance.

And if you can, buy both from the same workshop. It is not essential, but it removes the colour-matching problem entirely and means one person is responsible if anything needs adjusting.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bridal set cheaper than buying two rings separately?

Often slightly, because the two rings are made together in one process. The bigger saving is in not having to commission a fitted band later.

Can I wear the engagement ring from a set on its own?

Yes. Before the wedding, most people wear the engagement ring alone and keep the band aside until the ceremony.

Can I wear the band from a set on its own?

You can, but a shaped band designed to nest around a stone can look slightly unfinished by itself. If you plan to wear the band alone regularly, mention it before you buy.

What if I want the engagement ring from a set but a different band?

Ask. We hand-make everything, so mixing and matching is usually possible, and bespoke design carries no extra design cost.

Do men’s wedding rings come as part of a set?

Not usually. A bridal set means two rings for one person. A man’s band is bought separately, though ordering both at the same time keeps the metals matching.
