How Much Does a Solitaire Diamond Ring Cost? And Are They More Expensive?
What moves the price of a solitaire, real UK prices from our own range, and whether solitaires really cost more than halo rings.
A solitaire diamond ring can cost a few hundred pounds or several tens of thousands. That is not a useful answer on its own, so this guide breaks the price into the parts that actually move it, and tells you honestly which parts are worth paying for.
It also answers the question that usually comes with it: are solitaire rings more expensive than other styles? The short version is that a solitaire often costs more per carat of centre stone, but not necessarily more per ring.
What you are actually paying for
Four things, and they are very unequal.
| Component | Share of the price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The centre diamond | Usually the largest single part | Rises steeply with carat weight |
| The metal | Modest | Platinum costs more than gold; a wider band uses more metal |
| Making and setting | Meaningful on hand-made rings | This is where hand-made and mass-produced diverge |
| Certification and finishing | Small | We include the IGI certificate on centre stones at no charge |
On a solitaire, the diamond dominates more than on any other design, because there is no melee spreading the cost around. That is the single most important thing to understand about solitaire pricing.
Why carat weight moves the price so sharply
Diamond prices do not rise in a straight line with weight. A 1 carat stone costs considerably more than twice what a 0.50 carat stone of the same quality costs.
Two reasons. Large rough is rarer and harder to produce, and demand clusters at round numbers. That second point creates a practical opportunity: a 0.90 carat stone can cost noticeably less than a 1.00 carat stone while being under half a millimetre smaller across the top. Nobody can see that difference on a hand.
The same applies just under 1.50 and 2.00 carats. Buying slightly below the round number is the single most reliable way to save money on a solitaire without losing anything you can see.
Lab-grown versus natural
This is the biggest single lever on the price, and it needs stating clearly.
A lab-grown diamond has the same chemistry, the same hardness and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond. It is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories. The difference is where it was made, and lab-grown stones cost substantially less for equivalent size and grade.
We sell lab-grown diamonds, so treat that as our position, but the pricing difference is not our claim: it is visible on any comparison of certificated stones. What we will not do is give you a percentage, because lab-grown pricing has moved a great deal in recent years and any fixed figure would be out of date by the time you read it.
Real prices from our own collection
Rather than quoting a market range, here is what solitaires actually cost from us. All figures correct at the time of writing, all lab-grown, all hand-made in solid metal with a free IGI certificate on the centre stone.
- Solitaire Marquise Cut Engagement Ring — £538
- Solitaire Oval Cut Engagement Ring — £557
- Solitaire Round Cut Engagement Ring in White Gold — £563
- Solitaire Emerald Cut Engagement Ring — £672
- Bezel Cushion Cut Engagement Ring in Platinum — £904
The spread between those is mostly shape, centre stone size and metal, not markup. Emerald and cushion cuts lose more of the rough during cutting than a marquise does, and platinum costs more than gold both to buy and to work.
Are solitaire rings more expensive than other styles?
Compare like with like and the answer becomes clear.
Same total ring budget: a solitaire will have a better or larger centre stone than a halo ring at the same price, because none of the money went into melee and setting labour.
Same centre stone: the solitaire will be cheaper, because you are not paying for the extra stones or the extra setting work.
Same visual size on the finger: the solitaire will cost more, sometimes considerably. Getting a 9mm bright top from a single stone means buying roughly a 2.5 carat diamond. Getting it from a halo means a 1 carat stone with a frame of melee.
So “more expensive” depends entirely on which of those three comparisons you are making. Most people who feel solitaires are expensive are making the third one without realising it.
Where to save without regretting it
- Buy just under a round carat weight. The biggest saving for the smallest visible change.
- Do not chase the top colour grades. In a yellow or rose gold setting, a warmer stone reads perfectly white. In platinum the difference is more visible, so spend a little more there.
- Choose clarity by shape. On round, oval, pear and cushion brilliants, the facet pattern hides small inclusions and a lower clarity grade is genuinely invisible. On emerald and asscher cuts you look straight into the stone, so pay for clarity there.
- Choose a shape that spreads. Oval, marquise and pear look larger than a round stone of the same weight because their outline is longer.
- Do not save on cut. This is the one grade that decides whether the ring sparkles, and no other choice can compensate for it.
Costs people forget
Resizing, if the size is wrong. Insurance, which is usually a small addition to home contents but needs the ring listed specifically. And periodic maintenance: white gold needs re-plating every few years, and claws need checking annually.
Our delivery is free and insured within the UK, and returns are open for 30 days, so those two are not extra costs with us. Sizing sorted out within the returns window costs nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Should I spend two or three months’ salary?
No. That figure comes from twentieth-century advertising, not from anything measured, and no jeweller worth dealing with will repeat it to you as a rule. Spend what fits your circumstances. A well-chosen £600 ring on a hand that loves it beats a £6,000 ring bought on a credit card.
How much is a 2 carat solitaire?
Enough that it deserves its own explanation. We cover it in our guide to what a 2 carat solitaire diamond ring costs.
Does the metal make much difference to the price?
Less than people expect on a solitaire, because the ring uses relatively little metal. Platinum costs more than 18ct gold, which costs more than 14ct, but on a slim band the difference is a small share of the total.
Is a cheaper solitaire a worse solitaire?
Not automatically. It usually means a smaller centre stone, a slimmer band, or a shape that cuts more efficiently from the rough. What you should check is the cut grade and the quality of the finishing, not the headline price.
Can you make a solitaire to a specific budget?
Yes. We design bespoke pieces at no extra design cost, so tell us the figure and the shape and we will show you honestly what that buys, including where we would suggest spending more and where we would not bother.
