How Much Is a White Gold Engagement Ring in the UK?

What drives the price of a white gold engagement ring, how 9ct 14ct and 18ct compare, plus real UK prices.

“How much is a white gold engagement ring?” has no single answer, because the metal is rarely the expensive part. In most rings the centre diamond accounts for the bulk of the price, and whether that diamond is lab-grown or mined changes the total more than anything else you can choose.

This guide breaks the price into its real parts, explains what 9ct, 14ct and 18ct actually cost you, and gives honest figures from our own range so you have something concrete to work from.

What you are actually paying for

A white gold engagement ring price is made up of four things.

  • The centre diamond. Usually the largest single cost. Driven by carat weight first, then cut quality, colour and clarity.
  • The metal. The weight of gold in the band and setting, at the gold price on the day, plus the cost of the alloy metals.
  • Any accent stones. A pavé band or a halo adds dozens of small diamonds and the labour of setting each one.
  • The making. Hand-made settings cost more than cast-and-finished ones, and complex designs take longer.

Two rings can look almost identical and differ by thousands, purely because of the centre stone. That is why “how much is a white gold ring” is really “how much is the diamond in it”.

Lab-grown versus mined: the biggest single lever

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness and the same optical behaviour as a mined one, and it is graded by the same independent laboratories on the same scales. The difference is where it was formed.

Because lab-grown diamonds are not constrained by mining supply, they sit at a substantially lower price point than mined diamonds of comparable grade. We are not going to quote you a percentage, because the gap moves with the market and any figure would be out of date within months. What is safe to say is that for the same budget you will get a noticeably larger or noticeably better-graded stone lab-grown than mined, and the difference is easily visible.

Every centre stone we sell is lab-grown and comes with a free IGI certificate, so you can see exactly what you are buying rather than taking anyone’s word for it.

Does 9ct, 14ct or 18ct change the price much?

Carat here means gold purity, not stone size, which trips people up constantly. Pure gold is 24 parts out of 24. The number tells you how many of those 24 parts are gold.

Purity Gold content Relative metal cost Notes
9ct 37.5% Lowest Hard-wearing, but more alloy means a warmer base colour under the plating
14ct 58.5% Middle The common middle ground: good durability, good colour
18ct 75% Highest Richest metal, slightly softer, most premium feel

Here is the part nobody explains. Because the metal is often a minority of the ring’s total cost, stepping from 14ct to 18ct usually adds far less to the final price than stepping up a quarter of a carat on the centre stone. If your budget is tight and you want a bigger look, adjust the stone before you compromise on the metal.

A 14ct white gold ring is the most commonly requested specification in the UK for engagement rings. That is a trade observation rather than a measured statistic, and 18ct and platinum are both entirely normal choices too. If you are weighing the two middle options against each other, our guide to 14ct versus 18ct gold goes into the differences in wear and colour, and there is a separate honest look at whether 10K white gold is good enough for an engagement ring if you are shopping American listings.

The cost white gold has that other metals do not

White gold is the only one of the common bridal metals with a running cost, and almost nobody mentions it at the counter.

The bright silver-white you see is not the gold alloy underneath. It is a very thin coating of rhodium, a white metal from the platinum family, applied to give the crisp finish. That coating wears with use, most visibly on the underside of the band and at the knuckle, and when it thins the warmer alloy shows through as a faint yellow or grey patchiness.

Fixing it is re-plating, which is routine maintenance rather than a repair. It is not expensive on its own, but it recurs for the life of the ring. How often depends entirely on how hard you are on your hands, so treat any fixed number of years you are quoted as a guess.

Platinum has no equivalent cost. It is naturally white all the way through, so it never needs plating. Platinum is dearer to buy because it is denser, meaning more metal by weight goes into the same ring, and because it is more demanding to work at the bench. Over thirty years the gap between the two narrows.

Yellow and rose gold have no plating either. If the running cost bothers you but you want a white ring, platinum is the answer rather than a cheaper grade of white gold.

Real prices from our range

Concrete numbers help more than ranges. These are our own white gold designs, correct at the time of writing.

Ring Style Price
Solitaire Round Cut Engagement Ring in White Gold Single stone, classic £563
Toi et Moi Pear Cut Engagement Ring in White Gold Two stones side by side £685
Dutch Marquise Cut Bridal Set in White Gold Engagement ring plus matching band £932
Halo Marquise Cut Engagement Ring in White Gold Centre stone with surrounding halo £1,143

The pattern is worth noticing. A plain solitaire is the least expensive route to a real diamond ring. Adding stones, whether as a halo or as a second ring, is what moves the price up.

How much should you spend?

You will read that the answer is two or three months’ salary. That figure came from a jewellery advertising campaign, not from research, and there is no reason at all to treat it as a rule.

The sensible version is simpler: spend an amount you can pay for outright and will not resent in a year. A ring bought within your means and worn happily is a better ring than a more expensive one bought on credit.

What else the price should include

Compare like with like. A cheaper ring stops being cheaper if the certificate, delivery, resizing and returns are all extra. With us the IGI certificate on the centre stone, insured UK delivery and 30-day returns are all included, and bespoke design carries no extra design cost if you want something we do not stock.

Two costs are genuinely worth budgeting for beyond the ring itself. The first is insurance, because a ring is one of the few valuable things you wear outdoors every day. The second is the wedding band, which many people forget until months later and then find does not sit flush against the engagement ring. Buying both together as a set is the simplest way to avoid that.

How white gold compares at the same budget

Say you have a fixed number in mind. Here is roughly what changes if you move the metal and keep everything else the same.

  • White gold to yellow or rose gold at the same purity: effectively no change in metal cost, because all three contain the same proportion of gold. You save the future re-plating.
  • White gold to platinum: costs more up front. If you hold the total budget fixed, that money comes out of the diamond, so you end up with a slightly smaller or lower-graded stone.
  • 18ct white gold to 14ct: a modest saving on metal, which in most engagement rings is a minority of the total. Usually not enough to change the stone you can afford.
  • Mined centre stone to lab-grown: by far the largest change available, and the only one that meaningfully alters what size of diamond your budget reaches.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 14ct white gold engagement ring cost?

It depends almost entirely on the diamond. In our own range, white gold engagement rings with lab-grown centre stones start at £563 and a halo design runs to £1,143, correct at the time of writing. A mined diamond of the same size and grade would cost considerably more.

Is white gold cheaper than platinum?

Usually yes, because platinum is denser so more of it is needed to make the same ring, and it costs more to work. Platinum never needs re-plating, though, so some of that difference comes back over the years.

Is 9ct white gold worth buying?

It is perfectly good, durable jewellery and a legitimate way to reduce cost. It contains less gold, so the base colour under the rhodium plating is warmer, which matters slightly more as the plating wears.

Does the rhodium plating add to the price?

The initial plating is part of the ring. Re-plating later is a small maintenance cost, not a repair, and how often you need it depends on how hard you are on your hands.

Why are two similar-looking rings priced so differently?

Almost always the centre stone. Carat weight, cut grade and whether the diamond is lab-grown or mined can double or halve a price without changing how the ring looks in a photograph.
