Which Finger Does an Eternity Ring Go On?

Where an eternity ring goes: the usual finger, stacking order with your engagement and wedding rings, and when to switch hands.

Nobody tells you where to put an eternity ring. Engagement rings and wedding bands come with centuries of instruction; eternity rings arrived later and never picked up firm rules. So people improvise, and then worry they have got it wrong. You almost certainly have not — but here is what most people do, and why.

The usual answer

Most women in the UK wear an eternity ring on the ring finger of the left hand, stacked with the engagement ring and wedding band.

Within that stack, the most common order, working from the base of the finger outwards, is: wedding band, engagement ring, eternity ring. The wedding band sits closest to the heart, the engagement ring next, and the eternity ring on the outside where it was added last.

That is a convention, not a rule. Plenty of people reverse it and nobody notices.

Why the stacking order is worth thinking about

The order matters less for tradition than for wear. Two stone-set rings pressed against each other will grind at one another over years. Metal wears away, claws thin, and eventually a stone works loose.

If your engagement ring and eternity ring are both diamond-set, putting the plain wedding band between them acts as a buffer. It is a small decision that adds years to both rings.

The other consideration is height. If the engagement ring has a raised centre stone, an eternity ring sitting directly against it may not lie flat. A curved or chevron band solves this — our chevron round cut wedding band in rose gold is designed to nest around a raised setting rather than fight it.

Common arrangements

Arrangement Why people choose it
Wedding band, engagement ring, eternity ring The most common. Follows the order the rings were received.
Eternity ring, engagement ring, wedding band Puts the newest ring closest to the hand; some prefer the visual balance.
Wedding band, eternity ring, engagement ring Uses the eternity ring as a spacer so the engagement ring sits proud.
Eternity ring on the right hand Stack has become crowded, or the wearer likes symmetry across both hands.
Eternity ring on the middle finger Purely aesthetic. Increasingly common with slim stacking bands.

The right hand option

Moving the eternity ring to the right hand is a genuinely popular choice, and not a compromise. Three or four rings on one finger becomes bulky, catches on clothing and makes typing awkward. Splitting them across two hands solves all of that.

It also gives the eternity ring room to be seen. A substantial band like our stackable emerald cut three-quarter eternity band holds its own far better as a solo ring on the right hand than squeezed as a third layer on the left.

In several European countries — Germany, Norway, Poland, Spain among them — the wedding ring is traditionally worn on the right hand anyway, so the whole question shifts. There is no universal rule to break.

Can men wear an eternity ring?

Yes. There is nothing about the design that belongs to one gender, and men’s diamond-set bands are increasingly ordinary. Most men who wear one choose a wider band with flush-set or channel-set stones rather than raised claws, which is both more durable and more discreet.

What the ring is saying

Wherever it ends up, the meaning does not change. An unbroken line of diamonds around a circle is a fairly direct statement about something continuing without end. The ring is normally given after the wedding, marking an anniversary, a birth, or simply a stretch of years that mattered.

Because there is no fixed occasion, there is no fixed placement either. A ring given for a tenth anniversary and a ring given after a child is born may sensibly sit in different places on different hands. Both are correct.

Practical points that matter more than tradition

Does it fit flush? Hold the rings together before committing. A visible wedge-shaped gap will collect soap and skin, and the rings will wear on each other.

Which ring is hardest to resize? Full eternity rings usually cannot be resized at all, because there is no plain metal to cut. If your finger size fluctuates, wear the full eternity on the finger that is most stable, or choose a half eternity such as our stackable emerald cut half eternity band, which can generally be adjusted within limits.

Do you take rings off during the day? If the eternity ring goes on and off — for the gym, for cooking, for work — put it on the outside of the stack. Removing a middle ring means removing all three.

Is your job hard on jewellery? Bezel and channel settings survive far better than fine claw work. If you use your hands all day, that matters more than which finger you choose.

If the stack has stopped working

Sometimes three rings simply will not sit together, usually because the engagement ring was never designed with a third band in mind. There are three real fixes.

Wear one ring on the other hand. Have a shaped band made that follows the exact contour of the engagement ring — we do this as a bespoke commission at no extra design cost. Or have the rings soldered together into a single unit, which stops the rotation and rubbing but permanently commits you to that arrangement.

Solder only if you are certain. It is reversible but not free, and it removes the option of wearing the rings separately.

Three rings on one finger: making it comfortable

A stack that looks effortless in a photograph can be genuinely uncomfortable to wear. Three bands together occupy a surprising amount of finger, and the problems show up in ordinary tasks rather than dramatic ones.

Total width is the thing to watch. Two 2mm bands beside a 2mm engagement ring shank is about 6mm of finger covered, which most people find fine. Add a 3mm eternity band and you are at 7mm or more, and the stack starts pressing against the knuckle of the next finger when you make a fist.

Height matters too. If the engagement ring has a tall setting, the stack rocks rather than sitting flat, and the rings wear on each other at the contact points.

The usual solutions, in order of how drastic they are: reorder the rings so the plain band sits between the two stone-set ones; move one ring to the other hand; have a shaped band made that follows the engagement ring’s contour; or solder the rings together into a single unit.

Wearing rings on a chain

Worth mentioning because it comes up constantly and is treated as a last resort when it should not be.

Plenty of people wear an eternity ring on a chain around the neck — during pregnancy, while working, after weight change, or simply because they prefer it there. The ring is still being worn, and it is considerably safer than being left in a drawer or a locker.

Use a chain heavy enough for the ring’s weight, with a proper clasp rather than a spring ring, and check the join where the ring hangs every few months for wear.

Frequently asked questions

Should the eternity ring go above or below the engagement ring?

Either. Above — further from the hand — is more common because it reflects the order the rings arrived. Below gives the engagement ring more prominence.

Can I wear an eternity ring without a wedding ring?

Yes. Some people wear one alone on the right hand, and some unmarried couples use an eternity ring as their main ring. Nothing about the design requires a wedding first.

Which finger do you wear an eternity ring on if you are not married?

Any finger you like. The right-hand ring finger and the middle finger are both common choices that avoid confusion with an engagement ring.

Do you wear an eternity ring every day?

Most people do. If yours is a fine pavé or full eternity design, consider taking it off for heavy manual work, swimming and gardening. Our note on whether to wear a wedding ring every day applies equally.

What if the eternity ring keeps spinning?

Half eternity bands rotate and show plain metal at the front. Usually the ring is very slightly loose. A wider band, or a small sizing bead added inside, generally fixes it.

If you are putting a stack together, our guide to wearing an engagement ring and wedding band together covers the fit problems in more detail. To see the bands themselves, browse the wedding and eternity ring collection or the bridal sets, which are designed to sit together from the start.
