How Much Does a 2 Carat Oval Diamond Cost?

UK price guidance for a 2 carat oval diamond ring, what drives the cost, how big it looks, and where buyers overspend.

Two carats in an oval is one of the best value decisions in fine jewellery. The shape spreads its weight along the finger, so a two carat oval looks bigger than a two carat round — and it usually costs less to buy.

What it actually costs depends on a handful of things. This page explains each one, gives honest UK budget guidance, and shows where people overspend.

The one factor that changes everything

Before colour, before clarity, before the setting, there is a single question that moves the price more than all the rest put together: lab-grown or natural?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Same chemistry, same hardness, same sparkle, graded by the same laboratories on the same scales. The only difference is that it was grown in a laboratory rather than dug out of the ground. It costs a small fraction of the natural price.

Every diamond CarbonstoneUK sells is lab-grown, which is why two carats is within reach for a great many of our customers rather than being a once-in-a-lifetime extravagance.

UK price guidance

These figures are broad guidance to help you set a budget. They are not quotes. Diamond prices move, and two stones of the same weight can differ enormously in price depending on their grades and how well they are cut. Always get a written quote against a specific certificate.

What you are buying Rough UK guidance Notes
2 carat lab-grown oval, modest colour and clarity, simple gold solitaire ring Around £1,100 to £1,800 Excellent value. Check the bow-tie carefully at this level.
2 carat lab-grown oval, high colour and clarity, gold or platinum, halo or three stone Around £1,800 to £3,500 Where most of our two carat commissions land.
2 carat natural oval, comparable quality Many times the lab-grown figure — commonly five figures Visually the same ring. A completely different market.

Two things to keep separate in your head. The stone has a price, and the ring has a price. A plain gold solitaire mount adds relatively little. A platinum three stone design or a diamond-set halo adds considerably more, because it means more metal, more small diamonds and many more hours at the bench.

What pushes a 2 carat oval up or down in price

Colour. Colour grades run from D, meaning completely colourless, downwards through the alphabet as the stone warms. Long shapes gather warmth at their two ends, so colour shows more in an oval than in a round. A slightly higher colour grade is money well spent here.

Clarity. Clarity describes how few natural marks, called inclusions, sit inside the stone. Ovals are forgiving — their busy sparkle hides small marks well — so you rarely need to buy at the very top of the clarity scale. This is a sensible place to save.

Cut quality. Here is the trap. Laboratories such as IGI do not give an overall cut grade to fancy shapes, meaning any shape that is not round. So a badly proportioned oval can carry perfectly respectable paperwork. A poorly cut two carat oval is the most expensive mistake in this entire article.

The bow-tie. Every oval has a dark shadow across its middle shaped like a bow tie. Faint is normal. A black band that stays dark as the stone moves is not, and no saving justifies it. Always view a video of the actual stone.

Length-to-width ratio. Around 1.35 to 1.50 to one is the classic outline. Longer ovals look dramatic but tend to show worse bow-ties. Shorter ones look rounder and lose some of the shape’s advantage.

How big is a 2 carat oval?

Approximate measurements for well cut stones:

Stone Approximate size
1 carat oval About 7.7 mm by 5.7 mm
2 carat oval About 9.5 mm by 7.0 mm
2 carat round, for comparison About 8.1 mm across

Note that doubling the weight does not double the width. Weight grows much faster than width does, which is exactly why a two carat stone costs far more than twice a one carat stone of the same quality.

Where people overspend

  • Paying for top clarity in a shape that hides inclusions well. Move that money to colour or to cut instead.
  • Chasing an exact 2.00 carats. Weights land on round numbers at a price premium. A 1.90 carat stone looks identical on the hand and can cost noticeably less.
  • Buying deep. A deep stone hides its weight beneath the setting where nobody sees it. You are paying for diamond you will never look at. Check the millimetres.
  • Forgetting the extras. Certificates, insured delivery and returns are sometimes charged elsewhere. With us the IGI certificate on the centre stone is free, UK delivery is free and insured, and you have 30 days to return.

Oval rings we make

Every piece is hand-made in solid gold or platinum at our workshop in North Harrow, London. Our listed oval designs can all be built with a larger centre stone, including two carats, and there is no extra design cost for doing so.

The Solitaire Oval Cut Engagement Ring is £557 as listed and is the design most people scale up. A plain band and slim claws let a large stone look as large as it is.

The Hidden Halo Oval Cut Engagement Ring at £1,021 tucks small diamonds under the centre stone, adding a lift and a flash of light from the side while keeping the outline clean from above.

The Three Stone Oval Cut Engagement Ring, also £1,021, is worth considering if two carats is beyond your budget. Three stones spread across the finger cover more ground than one large stone of the same total weight.

Common questions

How much does a 2 carat oval diamond cost in the UK?

As guidance, a two carat lab-grown oval ring commonly falls somewhere between roughly £1,100 and £3,500 depending on colour, clarity, metal and setting. A natural stone of similar quality usually runs to five figures. Ask for a quote against an actual certificate, because grades change the answer completely.

Is a 2 carat oval cheaper than a 2 carat round?

Normally yes, comparing the same colour and clarity. Cutting an oval wastes less of the raw crystal, and demand for round is higher. The oval also looks bigger, so the value gap is wider than the price gap suggests.

Why is a 2 carat stone more than twice the price of a 1 carat?

Larger crystals are rarer and harder to cut well, so price rises much faster than weight. Expect considerably more than double, whether the diamond is lab-grown or natural.

Does a 2 carat oval look too big?

At around 9.5 mm long it is a statement, but ovals carry size gracefully because the shape follows the line of the finger. If you are unsure, a hidden halo on a slightly smaller stone gives similar presence for less.

Can you make a 2 carat oval ring to my own design?

Yes, with no design fee — you pay for the metal and the stones only. Send a sketch, a photograph or a link. We quote in writing, hand-make the ring in London, deliver free and insured across the UK, and give you 30 days to return it.

Buy the best cut oval you can find, view it on video before you commit, and two carats will look like far more than you paid for it.
