2 Carat Cushion Cut Engagement Rings: Value and Appeal
What a 2 carat cushion cut really looks like, what drives the price, and which settings suit it. Lab-grown pricing explained honestly.
The 2 carat cushion cut has become one of the most requested engagement rings we are asked about, and the reason is not complicated. It is big enough to be unmistakable, soft enough to suit almost any hand, and — now that lab-grown diamonds have made this size genuinely reachable — it no longer requires the budget it once did. Here is what you actually get for the money, and where the shape’s weak points lie.
What a 2 carat cushion looks like
First, the two measurements you need to keep separate in your head.
Carat is weight. One carat is 0.2 grams, so a 2 carat stone weighs 0.4 grams. It tells you nothing about size on its own.
Millimetres (mm) are length. This is the measurement across the top of the stone — the face you see when the ring is worn.
A 2 carat square cushion typically measures around 7.0 x 7.0mm. Corner to corner it spans nearly 10mm, so it reads wider than the flat measurement suggests. On a UK size K to N finger it covers a substantial share of the finger’s width and is instantly noticeable from across a room.
| Carat weight | Cushion, typical size | Impression on the hand |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00 ct | 5.5 x 5.5mm | Classic and understated |
| 1.25 ct | 6.0 x 6.0mm | Slightly more presence |
| 1.50 ct | 6.5 x 6.5mm | Clearly a larger ring |
| 2.00 ct | 7.0 x 7.0mm | A confident statement without being unwearable |
| 2.50 ct | 8.0 x 8.0mm | Large; dominates the finger |
| 3.00 ct | 8.5 x 8.5mm | Very large; needs a careful setting |
Individual stones vary with depth and proportions, so always check the millimetre figures on the certificate rather than assuming from the carat weight.
Why 2 carats is the sweet spot for a cushion
Cushion cuts are cut deep. A good share of their weight sits below the girdle, hidden inside the setting, which means a cushion looks smaller face-up than a round or an oval of identical weight. At 1 carat, that penalty is noticeable — a 1 carat cushion at 5.5mm reads considerably smaller than a 1 carat round at 6.5mm.
At 2 carats the shape comes into its own. There is enough stone that the depth no longer matters visually, the wide top gives the facets room to work, and the soft pillow outline reads as generous rather than merely square. Go much beyond 2.5 carats and a cushion starts to sit quite high and can begin to catch on clothing.
There is a second advantage at this size. Cushions are exceptionally good at hiding things. The many small facets scatter light so effectively that both a slightly warm colour and small internal marks become genuinely hard to spot. On a large emerald cut you must pay for high clarity; on a large cushion you can drop a grade or two and put the money into weight or metal instead. That is a real saving, and it grows with size.
Crushed ice or chunky? Decide before you buy
Two cushions can have the same weight, size and grades and look nothing alike, because the interior facet pattern differs. Very few listings tell you which you are getting.
- Crushed ice. Hundreds of tiny sparkles, like light on shaved ice. Lively and glittery, and outstanding at hiding inclusions. The edges look slightly less defined.
- Chunky or antique cushion. Larger, bolder facets that throw fewer but broader flashes, with a warm, vintage character. You can see more clearly into the stone, so clarity matters more.
Neither is superior. But if you are spending on a 2 carat stone, look at a video or the stone itself, and ask the seller directly which style it is. Photographs on their own will not tell you.
What it costs, honestly
Two things determine the bill: the centre stone and everything around it.
A 2 carat natural cushion of good colour and clarity is a five-figure purchase in the UK before you have paid for any metal. A 2 carat lab-grown cushion of comparable grade costs a small fraction of that. This is the single biggest lever you can pull, and it is the reason 2 carats has moved from aspirational to achievable for so many couples.
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Same carbon crystal structure, same hardness, same sparkle, graded on the same scale by the same laboratories. The difference is that it was grown in a controlled environment over a matter of weeks rather than forming underground. Everything CarbonstoneUK makes is lab-grown, and every centre stone comes with a free IGI certificate.
One honest caveat: lab-grown prices have shifted considerably in recent years and continue to move. Any price range published anywhere, including here, is guidance rather than a quote. Ask for a live price on a specific certified stone.
| What you are paying for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Centre stone: lab-grown or natural | By far the biggest factor in the total |
| Cut quality and proportions | A deep stone costs more per visible millimetre |
| Clarity and colour | Cushions hide both well, so you can be strategic here |
| Metal: 9ct or 18ct gold, or platinum | Hundreds of pounds of difference; platinum costs most |
| Setting design and handwork | Halos, three stone designs and pavé add diamonds and labour |
Settings that suit a 2 carat cushion
At this size the setting is doing real structural work, not just decoration.
Bezel. A rim of metal wraps the entire edge of the stone. It is the most protective option, sits lower on the finger and gives the soft cushion outline a clean modern frame. Our Bezel Cushion Cut Engagement Ring in Platinum is £904 at the time of writing and shows exactly how that looks.
Three stone. Flanking stones extend the diamond line along the finger, so the ring covers more area than the centre stone alone. It is the most cost-effective way to add presence. See our Three Stone Cushion Cut Engagement Ring at £957.
Halo. A ring of small diamonds surrounds the centre stone, adding several millimetres of apparent width. Very effective at this size, though it does soften the cushion’s own outline.
Think about the wedding band at the same time. A cushion’s curved sides mean a straight band may not sit flush against it, so try the pairing before you commit. Our Solitaire Cushion Cut Wedding Band in Sterling Silver at £904 is one way to echo the shape across both rings.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 2 carat cushion too big for everyday wear?
For most people, no. At around 7mm it is large but still practical, particularly in a bezel or a lower setting. Above about 2.5 carats it starts to stand proud of the finger and snag more often.
Will a 2 carat cushion look smaller than a 2 carat round?
Slightly, from directly above — around 7.0mm against 8.1mm. But the cushion’s corners extend further diagonally, and the square outline covers more of the finger’s width, so in practice the difference is far less than the numbers suggest.
What colour and clarity should I aim for?
Cushions are forgiving on both. Many buyers are perfectly happy a grade or two lower than they would accept in an emerald or Asscher cut, especially in yellow or rose gold where a slightly warm stone looks white against the metal. Always judge the actual stone rather than the letters.
Does a 2 carat lab-grown cushion hold its value?
Resale value for any diamond, lab-grown or natural, is well below retail. Buy it because you want to wear it, insure it properly using the certificate and receipt, and do not think of it as an investment.
How long does a bespoke 2 carat cushion take to make?
Sourcing a certified stone and hand-making the ring in solid gold or platinum usually takes a few weeks. We confirm a firm timeline once the stone is chosen. UK delivery is free and fully insured, with 30 days to return.
