Are Baguette Diamonds Cheaper Than Round?
Baguettes cost less per carat than round diamonds, but finished rings often cost the same. We use our own prices to explain why.
Short answer: yes, baguette diamonds are cheaper than round diamonds per carat. Usually noticeably cheaper.
Longer answer, and the one that actually helps you: that saving often disappears completely by the time the stones are in a finished ring. We will show you our own prices to prove it, because this is exactly the sort of thing jewellery websites gloss over.
First, what a baguette actually is
A baguette is a small diamond cut into a plain rectangle with sharp corners, named after the stick of French bread it resembles. It has around fourteen facets, which are the flat polished surfaces cut into the stone. That is very few. A round brilliant has fifty-seven.
Baguettes are step cuts, meaning their facets run in long parallel rows like the steps of a staircase. Step cuts do not twinkle, they flash. You get clean, glassy blocks of light rather than lots of small sparkles.
Baguettes are almost always used as supporting stones: set in a row along a band, placed either side of a larger centre diamond, or arranged in geometric Art Deco patterns. They are rarely used as the main stone in an engagement ring.
Why baguettes cost less per carat
Four reasons, and they all stack up.
- Less waste. Grinding a rough crystal into a perfect circle throws a lot of material away. Cutting it into a rectangle keeps far more of it. Less waste means a lower price.
- Less cutting work. Fourteen facets take a fraction of the time of fifty-seven, and every facet has to be placed by hand to a tight tolerance.
- Lower demand. Round is the most requested diamond shape in the world by a wide margin, and demand keeps prices firm. Nobody walks into a shop asking for a baguette engagement ring.
- They are small. Diamond prices rise steeply with size. A one carat stone costs far more than ten stones of a tenth of a carat each. Baguettes are almost always in that small size range.
All of that is real, and it is why you will see baguettes described as one of the best-value shapes going.
Now the part nobody tells you
Here is the honest bit. When you buy jewellery, you are not buying loose diamonds. You are buying diamonds, metal, and a great deal of skilled labour. On a diamond band, the stones are often the smallest part of the bill.
And baguettes are harder to set than round stones. Considerably harder.
Round stones are forgiving. If one sits a hair out of line, the eye does not catch it, because there is no straight edge to compare it against. Baguettes are unforgiving. Every stone has four straight edges and four sharp corners, and they all have to line up perfectly. One stone a fraction out of true and the whole row looks wrong. The stones also have to be matched to each other in length and width before setting even starts.
On top of that, those sharp corners are the weak point of the stone. Diamond is extremely hard, but it can still chip on a sharp knock. Good baguette jewellery protects the corners, usually by channel setting, where the stones sit in a groove between two walls of metal. Channel setting is slower and more skilled work than claw setting round stones.
So you save on the stones and spend it back on the setting.
Our own prices, side by side
Rather than talk in generalities, here is what comparable bands actually cost from us. These are real, current prices for hand-made rings.
| Ring | Shape | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Twisted Half Eternity Band | Round | £657 |
| Stackable Half Eternity Band | Baguette | £672 |
| Pavé Wedding Band | Baguette | £690 |
| Stackable Full Eternity Band | Round | £707 |
| Stackable Three Quarter Eternity Band | Round | £762 |
| Stackable Three Quarter Eternity Band | Baguette | £1,061 |
Look carefully at that table, because it tells you something useful.
Our Twisted Round Cut Half Eternity Band at £657 is actually cheaper than our Stackable Baguette Cut Half Eternity Band at £672. And at three-quarter eternity, the baguette version costs meaningfully more than the round one.
That is not a mistake in our pricing. It is what happens when you account for the extra setting time baguettes need, and for the fact that a baguette band uses longer stones covering more of the finger.
So when do baguettes save you money?
They genuinely do in three situations.
As side stones next to a larger diamond. Two tapered baguettes either side of a centre stone add a lot of visual width for very little money. Tapered means the stone is narrower at one end so it sits snugly against the centre diamond. This is one of the best value moves in all of jewellery.
When you want coverage rather than sparkle. A row of baguettes covers far more of your finger than a row of small round stones of the same total weight, because rectangles sit edge to edge with no gaps between them. If you want a band that reads as a solid line of diamond, baguettes give you that for less.
In simpler designs. Our Pavé Baguette Cut Wedding Band is £690 and gives you that clean run of rectangular stones without the extra work a full three-quarter eternity involves.
And when do they not save you money? When you compare finished rings of the same design and the same coverage. Then the setting labour equalises everything, and sometimes tips it the other way, as our own prices show.
Round versus baguette: what you get for your money
| Round | Baguette | |
|---|---|---|
| Price per carat | Highest of all shapes | Among the lowest |
| Price of a finished band | Similar, sometimes lower | Similar, sometimes higher |
| Sparkle | Maximum. Nothing beats it | Subtle, glassy flashes |
| Coverage of the finger | Gaps between stones | Edge to edge, solid line |
| Style | Classic, timeless | Art Deco, clean, architectural |
| Setting difficulty | Straightforward | Demanding, must be perfectly aligned |
| Risk of chipping | Low | Low if the corners are protected by metal |
| Resizing later | Easier | Harder, channel settings resist resizing |
What we would tell a friend
Do not choose baguettes because you think they are the cheap option. Choose them because you like the look: precise, linear, quietly glamorous, with a 1920s feel. That is a genuine style choice, and it is not for everyone.
If your goal really is maximum diamond for minimum money, the bigger levers are elsewhere. Buy a stone just under a round carat number rather than just over. Drop from D colour to G if the ring is yellow or rose gold, because warm metal hides any faint tint anyway. Choose VS2 clarity, where nothing is visible to the naked eye, rather than paying for flawless. And choose lab-grown over mined, which is the single biggest saving available to you.
Every centre stone we set is lab-grown and comes with a free IGI certificate from an independent grading laboratory, so the colour and clarity are verified by someone other than us.
Frequently asked questions
Are baguette diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. Baguette describes the shape the stone is cut into, nothing else. Ours are lab-grown diamonds, which are chemically and physically identical to mined ones and graded on exactly the same scales.
Why are baguettes so much cheaper per carat then?
Less material is wasted in cutting, there are far fewer facets to polish, they are usually small, and demand for them is far lower than for rounds. Nothing about the price reflects a lower quality of diamond.
Do baguettes sparkle?
Not in the way a round does. They give clean, mirror-like flashes rather than scattered sparkle. If the person wearing the ring loves lots of glitter, a round pavé band will make them happier.
Are baguette rings harder to look after?
Slightly. The sharp corners are the vulnerable point, so avoid knocking the ring against hard surfaces. Properly channel set, with metal protecting the corners, they are perfectly practical for daily wear. They are also a little harder to resize, so get the size right first time.
Can I mix baguettes and round diamonds in one ring?
Absolutely, and it is a classic combination. A round centre stone with tapered baguettes either side is one of the most enduring designs in jewellery. If you want that made specially, our bespoke design service carries no extra design cost.

The difference between these two shapes is much easier to judge in person than in a photograph. One glitters, the other gleams, and most people know instantly which they prefer.
