How Big Is a 2 Carat Cushion Cut Diamond? Real Sizes Explained
A 2 carat cushion measures around 7.5mm across. Real measurements, everyday size comparisons, and why identical weights can look different.
Two carats sounds enormous until you see it, and then most people are surprised by how wearable it is. A two carat cushion cut is roughly the width of a pea — big enough that everyone notices it, small enough that it still fits under a jumper sleeve.
This guide gives you the actual measurements, explains why two cushions of identical weight can look different sizes, and shows you how to picture it on your own hand before you spend anything.
The short answer, in millimetres
A carat is a measure of weight, not width. Two carats is 0.40 grams. What that turns into on the finger depends entirely on how the stone is cut.
As a working guide, a well-cut two carat cushion measures approximately:
| Cushion style | Approximate size across the top | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| Square cushion (about 1.00 ratio) | Around 7.5mm x 7.5mm | Bold and compact, fills the width of the finger |
| Slightly elongated (about 1.15 ratio) | Around 8.0mm x 7.0mm | The most common look — square with a hint of length |
| Rectangular cushion (about 1.30 ratio) | Around 8.6mm x 6.6mm | Longer and slimmer, flatters shorter fingers |
Those are approximations, not promises. Every stone is cut individually and the certificate for your specific diamond will give exact measurements. Always check that document rather than a chart.
Everyday things a two carat cushion is about the size of
- A garden pea.
- The plastic head of a drawing pin.
- Slightly wider than the letter O printed on a page in normal type.
- About a third of the width of a five pence piece.
The best test costs nothing. Cut a 7.5mm square out of paper, or draw one, and rest it on your ring finger. That gives you a more honest sense of scale than any photograph on a screen, because screens vary in size and photographs are usually taken very close up.
Why two identical weights can look different sizes
This is the part that catches people out, and it is worth understanding before you shop.
Depth. Cushions are often cut deeper than other shapes because a deep stone holds weight without adding width. Two stones can both weigh 2.00ct, but the shallower one will look noticeably larger from above. Look at the depth percentage on the certificate — lower usually means more spread, though go too shallow and the sparkle suffers.
Ratio. A square cushion and a rectangular cushion of the same weight cover different amounts of finger and read as different sizes even though the scales agree.
The setting. A bezel — a rim of metal around the whole stone — adds visible width and makes a stone look bigger overall. A halo of small diamonds adds more still. Thin prongs hide almost nothing; thick claws cover the corners and shrink the outline.
Band width. A slim band makes any centre stone look larger by contrast. A wide, chunky band competes with it. This costs nothing to get right and is the most underrated trick in ring design.
How two carats compares with other weights
| Carat weight | Approximate cushion width | Everyday comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00ct | About 5.5mm to 6.0mm | A grain of rice, end on |
| 1.50ct | About 6.5mm to 7.0mm | The tip of a pencil eraser |
| 2.00ct | About 7.5mm to 8.0mm | A garden pea |
| 3.00ct | About 8.5mm to 9.0mm | A small dried chickpea |
Notice how slowly the width grows. Doubling from one carat to two only adds about a third to the width, because weight rises with volume in three dimensions while width rises in one. That is why the jump from 1ct to 2ct feels smaller on the hand than it does on the invoice.
How it looks on different hands
Finger size changes everything, and no chart can replace trying one on.
On a slender finger — say a UK size H to J — a two carat cushion is a statement. It will reach close to the edges of the finger and will be the first thing anyone sees.
On a mid-range finger, around K to M, it reads as generous and confident but still balanced.
On a larger finger, N and above, two carats reads as elegant rather than dramatic. If you want the same visual impact you might look at a slightly higher weight or a halo design.
One practical note: a large centre stone sits higher off the finger than a small one. If the wearer works with their hands, gardens, does sport or wears gloves regularly, ask about a lower setting or a bezel. A high-set two carat catches on things.
Cushion versus round at two carats
A two carat round measures roughly 8.1mm across. A square cushion of the same weight measures around 7.5mm. So a round of equal weight actually looks slightly wider, because a round spreads its weight evenly in a circle while a cushion tucks some of it into the corners and the depth.
What the cushion gives you instead is a different character. It is softer, older-feeling, with broader flashes of light rather than the fine rapid sparkle of a round. And, as a rule of thumb in the trade, a cushion costs less per carat than a round of the same quality — because cutting a cushion wastes less rough crystal and demand for round is higher.

Frequently asked questions
How big is a 2 carat cushion cut diamond in mm?
Roughly 7.5mm x 7.5mm if it is square, or around 8.6mm x 6.6mm if it is cut as a rectangle. Depth and cutting style shift those figures, so always check the measurements printed on the certificate for your particular stone.
Is a 2 carat cushion bigger than a 2 carat round?
Slightly smaller across the top, in most cases. A round spreads its weight evenly and typically measures around 8.1mm at two carats, while a square cushion measures closer to 7.5mm. The cushion looks broader and squarer, though, which is why many people perceive it as larger.
Is 2 carats too big for everyday wear?
Not at all, but the setting matters more than the weight. A high-set two carat will catch on clothing and knock against surfaces. A lower setting or a bezel makes the same stone perfectly practical for daily life.
Does a bigger cushion need higher colour and clarity?
Somewhat. The larger the stone, the more easily the eye picks up warmth and inclusions. At two carats it is worth aiming for a colour grade of G or better if you want a bright white look, and an eye-clean clarity such as VS2. Going beyond eye-clean adds cost you cannot see.
Can I see a two carat cushion before committing?
Yes. We are based in North Harrow, London, and every order carries free insured UK delivery with 30 days to return, so you can also decide at home in your own light.
Numbers on a page only take you so far. Cut out that paper square, rest it on the finger, and you will know within seconds whether two carats is the right size for you.
