Is a Heart Cut Diamond a Good Engagement Ring Choice?
A heart cut diamond makes a good engagement ring if its two lobes match. Choose 0.50 ct or more and protect the point with a V-shaped claw or a halo.
Yes, a heart cut diamond is a good engagement ring choice if you want an unusual, romantic shape and you choose the stone with care. Pick a heart of 0.50 carat or more so the outline reads clearly, check that the two rounded lobes match, and protect the point with a V-shaped claw, because the tip is the part most likely to chip.
What should you check on a heart cut diamond before buying?
A heart cut diamond should have two lobes of equal size, a crisp cleft (the dip between the lobes) and a point exactly in line with that cleft. Most jewellers favour a length-to-width ratio of roughly 0.90 to 1.10; outside that range the heart looks squashed or stretched. An IGI report grades polish and symmetry for a heart, and symmetry is the grade to read first.
For how hearts compare with every other shape we cut, see our complete guide to diamond shapes and cuts.
What size heart cut diamond looks best on a ring?
A heart cut diamond looks best at 0.50 carat and above, which is a rule of thumb in the trade rather than a measured figure. Below that size the cleft and lobes are so small that, at arm’s length, the stone can read as a rounded triangle. At 1 carat the heart is clear on the hand. The sizes below come from our own heart engagement ring listing.
Each half-carat step adds well under a millimetre in each direction, so the visible gain from 1 ct to 2 ct is smaller than many buyers expect.
| Carat weight | Width x length | Depth |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00 ct | 6.32 x 7.12 mm | 4.14 mm |
| 1.50 ct | 6.95 x 7.90 mm | 4.71 mm |
| 2.00 ct | 7.50 x 8.50 mm | 5.28 mm |
How should a heart cut diamond be set?
A heart cut diamond should be set with three or five claws, one of them a V-shaped claw wrapped over the point, or in a halo or rubover (bezel) setting that guards the whole edge. The point is thin, and a knock can chip it even though diamond scores 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. A halo also makes the outline look larger and sharper.
Our Halo Heart Cut Engagement Ring in Rose Gold uses a halo, a raised cathedral setting and a pavé band. Our guide to what a halo engagement ring is covers the setting in plain terms.
Does a heart cut diamond look smaller than a round diamond?
A heart cut diamond does not look smaller than a round diamond of the same weight; it usually looks about the same or slightly larger. A 1 carat round brilliant is roughly 6.4 to 6.5 mm across, while a 1 carat heart on our listing measures 6.32 x 7.12 mm, so it covers a similar area and reads longer on the finger. Shallow, spread-out hearts look bigger still, but often sparkle less.
How much does a heart cut engagement ring cost?
A heart cut engagement ring from us is £949 at the time of writing for our lab-grown rose gold halo design, with the heart offered from 1 to 2 carats; ask us to price a larger stone. Natural heart diamonds cost far more at the same size, and we sell only lab-grown, so we do not quote a natural price we cannot stand behind.
For a band, the Stackable Heart Cut Eternity Band in Rose Gold is £2,450 at the time of writing, and our heart shaped diamond ring collection shows both. CarbonstoneUK, a lab-grown diamond jeweller in North Harrow, London, includes a free IGI certificate on every centre stone.
Frequently asked questions
Is a heart shaped engagement ring too sentimental?
No. A heart shaped engagement ring is only as sentimental as its setting. A heart in a slim white gold or platinum solitaire looks clean and modern, while the same stone in a rose gold halo looks softer. The shape suits anyone who wants something other than a round or oval.
Do heart cut diamonds chip more easily than other shapes?
Yes, at the point. The thin tip of a heart, like that of a pear or marquise, is more exposed than the edge of a round stone. A V-shaped claw, a halo or a rubover setting removes most of that risk. Have the claws checked every 6 to 12 months.
Is a heart cut diamond more expensive than a round one?
No. A heart cut diamond usually costs less per carat than a round brilliant of the same colour and clarity, because cutting a round wastes more of the rough crystal. A well-cut 1 ct heart with matched lobes can still cost more than a poorly matched one, so symmetry matters more to price than shape alone.
Which metal suits a heart cut diamond best?
Rose gold suits a heart cut diamond best if you want a soft, warm look, which is why our heart halo ring is made in rose gold. White gold or 950 platinum makes a colourless stone look whiter, and yellow gold flatters a slightly warmer stone. Any of them can be made to order.
Does a heart cut diamond suit a small hand?
Yes. A heart cut diamond suits a small hand well, because its width and length are close to equal, so it does not run towards the knuckles the way a long marquise can. On a slim finger, a heart of 0.75 to 1 ct usually looks generous without overpowering the hand.
Can I have a heart cut diamond as a plain solitaire?
Yes. We can make a heart cut solitaire as a bespoke piece at no extra design cost, with a V-shaped claw on the point. The 2 heart rings we stock today are a halo engagement ring and an eternity band, so a plain heart solitaire is made to order.
